  • Question on Welding stainless

My Neighbor gave me an 8ft Stainless work bench leftover from remodeling their pizza resturant.

Both the back legs are broken off..

The legs are welded to a removable stainless channel on the bottom of the bench..

The question is if I get a roll of 308 will I be able to weld the legs back on using the 02/C02/AR (Oxarc Stargon) gas I have.

    The welder is a 90amp Powe-r-mate Mig.

If I need another gas I'll just make a mild steel leg and bolt the sucker on.

It's just going to be a bench in my Garage (non food use) unless my wife gets some funny ideas for the Kitchen.

It may be ugly, but I'd try it. Test it on some scrap, first to see how the arc acts....if you like it, go for it. For a small project, or a one time thing, and if you have the 308 on hand...then do it. There are better gasses for stainless, though.

for that matter, you can weld it with er70,6011, or any steel electrode. don't waste you money on 308 or 309 unless you are worried about the appearance of the weld[it will rust].

Sure, just to weld a leg on use mild steel rod, fluxcore or anything. It won't hurt it at all. nobody will think bad thoughts about you for doing it either.

A place called "The Real Source" in Co. has stainless steel paint if you don't like what it looks like after using the fluxcore...says it has real stainless steel mixed it the spray can...

stainless flux-core is a good option.Just use 75/25 or higher argon mixes with it.I found it at a airgas clearance,25 pounds of .045 avesta 316L stainless fluxcore new in box for $20.00.They are going to start having clearance sells pretty quick.Should be one near you? This stuff hardly has any smoke, and leave a nice looking bead.It has a real wide welding range.

                  Airgas?

Why is Airgas going to have clearance sales?

If it doesn't sell....they have to pass gas.

Biil,The one here has one in the spring, and they bring all there surplus stuff to this main store in Portland.I thought since they have 1300 stores some other stores would do the same? The deals on wire, and rods is great. The Sometimes there is great deals from equiptment.Esab,Thermal-arc show up,but no Miller that I have seen.

                        Thanks Scott,

I didn't see any clearance sale signs the last time I visited the Orlando Airgas store. But they seemed so empty I thought you were suggesting they were going out of business... Glad that wasn't what you meant... Just passing gas like Rocky said...

I started working on the table today..

No problems with using E70 wire on 304 stainless.
gas was Oxarc Stargon 9 (co2/ar)

The picture is of some 1/8" mild steel bracing welded to the 304 stainless channel.
I'm reinforcing the leg mounts so they won't collapse again.

                            2nd picture..

304 to 304 (welding the leg mounts back on)
Same E70 wire and Stargon 9 gas as before.

To much heat.. you can see where it was eating away at the leg.
