i am having one **** of a time doing over head welds. for one reason or the other i just cant get a grip on it. i use a mm200 at work and at home i have a hh135. in both machines i run 035 wire and 75/25 gas. obviosly the heat setting are different depending on what i am doing usually i weld metal ranging from 1/8 to 1/2 in plate, tube and angle. any help you could offer would be great.

    thanks

HAVE YOU DONE ANY VERTICAL UP WELDING? OVERHEAD IS USSUALLY EASIER THAN VERT UP ONCE YOU GET USED TO HAVING TO BE UNDERNEATH WHAT YOUR WELDING...
YOU NEED TO USE ENOUGH WIRE SPEED TO KEEP THE METAL TRANSFERING AND NOT GLOBBING/PAUSING ON THE WIRE. USE A SIDE TO SIDE MOTION WHERE YOU ARE TRAVELING QUICKLY ACROSS THE PUDDLE AND PAUSEING AT THE EDGES. THE PAUSE IS VERY IMPORTANT AS IT MAKES THE WELD "GRAB" ONTO THE PLATE AND HOLD ITSELF FLAT INSTEAD OF TRYING TO DROOP IN THE CENTER. AFTER THAT, IT JUST GETTING USED TO WORKING WITH YOUR NECK CRANKED UP...

OH, ALSO IF YOUR LIKE ME AND NOT VERY STEADY HANDED BY NATURE, IT HELPS ALOT TO HAVE SOMETHING TO BRACE YOUR LEFT ELBOW AGAINST, EVEN IF IT IS JUST A PAIR OF VISE GRIPS CLAMPED TO SOMETHING CLOSE ENOUGHT...

GOOD LUCK, LET US KNOW HOW YOU DO-

      Hi Chris,

You asked a very broad question... What in particular is your difficulty with overhead???

what happens is my welds tend to sag away from the work or run away from the metal that i am trying to weld.

You've still got me thinking Chris... Are you trying to run a Texas weave or strictly a stringer? What I'm getting at is are you running too big a weld puddle??? Good Luck!!!

                  Texas weave

Now that is funny. Your staterment just reminded me about 4 vertical up cover pass weaves that I saw on the frame of a dump truck at my work place. Someone extended the frame of this truck, and for some reason ran a 2" wide weave on the cover pass of each vertcal up. Now thanks to you I know what to call the weave technique that this person used.

Hey Dan! Glad you got a kick out of "Texas Weave"!!! I think I picked the phrase up from a co-worker who used to work for Electric Boat Company...

So Chris... Have you had a chance to try some more welds??? What's the story???
