  • Stainless to mild steel question

I want to weld some SS sch. 40 pipe to some 2" 14ga. mild steel sqaure tubing. I have a MM210. What wire should I use and will I have to change the way I weld? Will the bead run the same as mild steel?
I guesswhat I am asking what is the difference?

I hope somebody tells me nothing sifferent just use ss wire.

I asked this very question about two months ago, you can get the answers in a search of my posts. 309L wire was suggested, and using a "buttering" pass. I take that to mean lay a bead on the mild without touching the stainless, then lay a second bead that connects the first bead to the stainless material. I haven't used the info yet, so I can't tell you much more. I had trouble finding the wire in Memphis. " America's Distribution Center ", yeah right! I ordered it from Cyberweld.
One thing about this board, you'll get the answer from the pros, like Rocky D, Dan, and Mike Sherman. I used to think it was fun welding, but now it's fun to see the neat tools and projects and get some more ideas!
Have you inventoried your property today?

How about this question? Would welding SS to SS differ than regular welding with the exception of the wire and gas? I mean the technique and will the weld look the same.

      Dan,

How about e-mailing me and giving me your number. I would like to talk to you about this very thing.

Sruburn: I've welded alot of transition pieces(mild steel to stain.) Never had to butter anything although just with tig and stick, with 309. Haven't done it with mig. I would like to know also if there is a procedure especially for mig. Stu
