  • MIG gas pressure???

I am MIG welding steel with .30 wire and I am wondering what pressure I should have on the CO2 + Argon Mix? Does it matter based on the wire size and if so can I someone give me a range?

    Thanks,
    Evan

You can start with 15cfh or so and if you are not getting any porosity you could go down a couple if it is really calm where you are working. In the summer when all the doors are open I turn up a couple in case of slight breeze. Most setups deliver 50 psi to the flowmeter, its calibrated on that but only ounces at the gun, it is measured by volume, cubic ft per hour.

It's not based on wire size, but more on the size of the torch head. I run a M 25 most of the time with pressures of 20 to 25 cfh..sometimes more. However, I don't like c25....too wet for me, I run c50, which has the advantage of being able to weld all position with out resetting the machine parameters. BTW, I mix it myself. Easier for me....and I like easy!

Welcome to the forum, NW. I have a Smith Gas Mixer and plant plumbed argon, and a tank of CO2. I can mix any variant I wish. I work in industrial maintenance, so I need the capability to go to spray transfer, plus I don't have to wrestle argon bottles around anymore. All I have to do is turn a dial.
