Are you getting good fusion with the backing plate? Are your lo-hy electrodes kept in an oven all the time at atleast 250 Deg. F.? Is this a highly restrained joint? How high is your preheat? What material are you welding? The most likely scenario is your electrodes are contaminated and the preheat is not high enough for 2" steel. Please check these things and write back on Monday.Respectfully,
Mike Sherman

I bet it isnt really cracks but could be incomplete fusion with the backing bar. Did you cut one open or are you taking the test for the word? If the bar isnt fit right it will read funny also. I have seen where backing strips not being fit tight in behind cause funny readings too. That test is really dependant on operator skill also and a guys first week on the job could cause problems. Cut one open and see whats the deal.

Welcome to the forum, BB...sounds like LOF rather than cracks....did they remove the backer before U/S ? How wide was your root gap before welding? Were you sure of the material designation of the backer? I like to have a ample root opening so that I can point the rod into the corner, one side at a time as I weave along. What position were you doing?
More info will help us diagnose better.
