  • welding with c02????????W

What do you pros think of welding with straight c02? I got a extra c02 tank that came with my kegulator. When I got my muffler welded the guy showed me his setup witch was a HH 175 (and I have since bought) with c02 for sheilding gas. I have checked my regulator that came with my welder and it doesnt fit... I read somewhere that there is a connector I can get to make it fit whats your thoughts
    Thanks in advance

Been running straight Co2 on steel for over 20 years, everything from automotive sheet metal to 3/8 plate, and it works fine.
In my opinion it is just as good as mixed gas on steel, and it provides more gun cooling.
You can't use a beer regulator for MIG, it will freeze up.
There are cylinder adaptors available for your welding regualtor.
I'll flip my hood down now as I expect a lot of flaming coming my way.

where can I get these cylinder adaptors? Is this a common item at my local gas company? I was going in the morning to get this tank filled at my local fire extinguiser refill shop. They have c02 and thats where we usualy get the tanks refilled but I doubt that they carry this cylinder adaptor also how much do you suppose they cost

Around here, they are about $10 for an adapter.

Around here industrial gas suppliers are welding dealers and carry the needed adapter. Any of the welding dealers on the web can also sell you one.

CGA-320 CO2 cylinder service to CGA-580 Argon regulator service is Western Enterprises Part Number 806 adapter. Your dealer might have adapter from Victor, Smith or Harris with different part number.

TREVOR...............AH MAN BAD NEWS THE REGULATOR THAT COME WITH YOUR HANDLER WILL NOT WORK ON CO2 IT WILL FREEZE UP..............THIS WILL REQUIRE THE PURCHASE OF ANOTHER REGULATOR FOR STRAIGHT CO2..................I'VE NOT HEARD ANYONE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE REGULATOR ON 75/25 SO I THINK IT WORKS OK ON THAT BLEND...............STRAIGHT CO2 RUNS COLD...........BUT YES IT DOES COOL A MIG GUN GOOD.....

I'm using c25 and the other day it was about 45 degrees in my shop, doing a lot of welding (a plate on a stand, have lots of wire to melt) and i noticed my regulator had a little frost on it. running at 20cfh. didn't freeze up though. chumly.

In the short run, a heat lamp on the regulator will keep things flowing. Just don't cook it.
I have a water cooled 600 amp torch on a feeder, one section of the 'Cooling' water goes through a heat exchanger (cold exchanger?) on the the co2 regulator . This set-up works fine even on cold days, working in the wind with the gas turned up.

Other fixes I have seen include special heated covers for the regulator.

The small regulators used on keg systems won't flow enough.

Buy a good one with a flow meter and you will have no problems.

                    Co2 heater for engine drive?

You mean when I built my rough terrain cart for my Lincoln 305g engine drive,I built a bottle warmer tank holder by mistake? The fan in the engine drive blows warm air at the bottle.Cool I didn't know I was so smart.

                        Doesn't matter.

I don't use co2 anyway,I use mixed gases. That should rattle Franz!Rock it blows hot air when not welding also,Just idling there. My 1.5 cents.

great news!!! I went to my local welding gas co. and he traded me even up for my old coca cola c02 for a brand new c25 tank..I didn't have to buy a adapter after all and got better welding gas.. It was acualy cheeper to do it this way than it would have been to get c02 and that adapter..It came out to $54 with a large roll of wire and and some of that anti spatter stuff for your nozzle the c 25 was $23.00 thanks for all the advice anyways Igot somewelding to do now

Scott, How do you like your Lincoln 305G? I am looking at the same and the trailblazer 301G. I like the lincoln because of the completely enclosed motor. Is it a quiet machine? Noise is a issue with me. I noticed the trailblazer has a idle feature when note in use. What about your lincoln? If you had to do it all over again, would you still get a lincoln or even something else. Any idea on the weld stability, stick, mig, tig????? What were your reasons for purchasing??? Anyways, I appreciate any info.

                            Regards,
                            Walt

                              305g

Walt,I just seen your question.I answered some of it in the other post. The lincoln has a auto idle switch just like most engine drive have now. What exactly do you plan on doing with your engine drive? The only other Miller machine I would consider would be a new Miller Legend.I would be giving up some in arc quality, but gaining in the noise area some.Atleast on lower welding voltages, and when using it as a 5000 watt generator. The Lincoln peak output is 10,000 watts like the Trailblazer. The legend makes generator power at 1800 rpm,and the Lincoln305/Miller 301 make generator power at 3600 rpm.But when welding with the Legend on CV/DC its ouput and rpm is the same as the Trailblazer, at 2400 rpm low idle, and 3600 rpm at max welding load. This whole engine drive stuff is starting to get real hard to pick a real winner,It kind of depends what you are doing with it.The Ranger 250 welds as nice as mine if you don't quite need as much power. It won't weld one size rod as well for pipe fitters. That one is a real good value.Same engine as in the Trailblazer if you get the Onan 20.5 hp.The legend comes with the Kohler 20hp,and the 305g comes with the Kohler 22hp.The only machine with both engine brands is the Trailblazer, and also the only one with ac welding output.I would buy the Lincolns over all of the rest, because of its welding arc,and adjustabilty,Then second would be the Legend for its 1800 rpm generator, even if it half as much power as the others.I would also be real happy with a 250 ranger, for it's welding arc.I have seen it on sale for $2667.00
That was when I bought mine.don't over look that welder, because it welds the same as mine. Are you confused yet?
