First and foremost, we at Hobart value each and every one of you and your participation in the Weld Talk Community. We believe that we are simply the custodian of this online Community. We take that role very seriously and will not do anything without thoughtful deliberation. However, we cannot always accommodate each individuals desires and must make tough decisions on things such as screen width, color choices, font sizes and forums structure.
As you know, Hobart Welding Products' web site recently went through a major upgrade. The decision was made to widen the side because in reviewing our web traffic we found that over 80% of Hobart's site visitors are able to view screen resolutions of 1024 x 768 and higher. The widening of the site was done in an effort to take advantage of the extra room available on the majority of our visitor's screens. We are now able to present more information with less vertical scrolling.
For those of you struggling with horizontal scrolling as a result of this change, we recommend you try changing your computer monitor resolution from what is probably 800 x 600 to the new 1024 x 768 resolution. If this new size is comfortable for your eyes, the horizontal scrolling issue will be eliminated.
To make this change, follow these steps if you are running Windows XP
operating system ...
1. Right click anywhere on the desktop, and select PROPERTIES.
2. Click on the SETTINGS tab.
3. The "Screen Resolution" control box probably indicates your current setting is 800 x 600.
4. Move the slider bar in the "Screen Resolution" control box until the resolution changes to 1024 x 768.
5. Click the APPLY button. Your screen will blink as it resets itself. You will be asked if you want to keep this setting. Select YES.
6. Open Internet Explorer and view the Weld Talk site. The horizontal scrolling requirement should now be gone.
We are also planning to make a few additional minor modifications to the forum on Monday, October 8th to help with some of the recent concerns and add a little relevant advertising to highlight a few Hobart products. It will appear on the right side of the current content so should not interfere with the forums.
Regarding Sparky, he was not been retired but simply gone into hiding for the moment. It sounds like many of you prefer he return to site.
We will continue to listen and participate in the dialog and take your input into consideration when making decisions. We also may backtrack at times based on what we learn, as we are not afraid to admit we are wrong. However, we ask, as always, that you try and keep the discourse constructive and as positive as possible.
Best regards,
The Hobart Team
