I am looking at a R400-S welder (on line) and do not know anything about it.
can anyone inform me of the power requirements? I only have 230V single phase
We get posts all the time from guys who got heck of a deal on 3 phase machines, only to find them unusable in the home shop. the reason they sell so cheap is because industry doesn't buy old, used equipment much at all, and that's all they are used for (and commercial shops with 3 phase).
You are wise to be asking befor the purchase. Pass on it, and look for something you can use. Also, the industrial units amerage draw is beyond the capabilities of many home electrical panels, so always consider that, even on the 220 machines. One last consideration is shipping cost. be sure you have a firm fix on it. Welders can be very heavy (about like a safe!), and cost $$$ to get to your home.
I suggest you hunt around in Craigslist for welders, as well (benefit there is you get to see it work before you buy it!).
