  • i need a co2 regulator

    hello,
    i noticed hobart doesn't sell a co2 regulator.
does anyone know where i can get one for a hobart handler 140?

Most of us just use the argon regulator with a CO2 nipple (cga 320) and the female argon fitting (cga 540)screwed on. Just pick up the adapter parts at your LWS. They will likely have the adapter premade.

i was told the regulator that came with it wasn't designed for co2 and would freeze up

It may get some frost in extreme conditions, but never really problematic, especially at a hobbiest level.

It is my understanding that you want a co2 regulator for straight co2. It is not due to a freezing problem but that it is made differently and might damage a c25 reg over time.

If you google co2 regulator shopping you might find something.

            any one will work?
i thought maybe it had to handle a certain pressure from the tank.
i'm new to welding and just try to get everything matched up right.
thanks for the help,i'll google it

Stop by LWS and get CGA 320 to CGA 580 adapter.... Regulator internals are probably same for most inert gases applications...

RADNORâ„¢ Cylinder adapters connect a regulator to a cylinder or other equipment when different CGA-threads on the mating parts make a direct connection impossible. adapters must be selected with care to ensure that regulators and other equipment are used only with compatible gases and pressure ratings. A mixture of non-compatible gases in any system is a possible hazard. Regulators and all other parts of an adapted system must be thoroughly purged of all contaminants, especially organic material and residual gases. Replace worn or damaged fittings immediately to ensure safe and dependable operation.

                A CGA-540 is OXYGEN..

                A CGA-580 is ARGON (and/or mix) ...

My bad on the cga number, i just briefly looked it up, probably just pooched typing it in.
I have been using inert gas regs on CO2 for over 20 years. When welding nonstop in the winter for long periods it will get ice on it, but has never caused an actual regulation issue. Co2 regulaters usually have some more tubing with fins, or a heat sink(guess it might be an evaporator) on it to help prevent icing.

This was 12+ years ago, but when I bought my Miller welder at Airgas, I got a Harris regulator that was made for CO2 as it came with a CGA320 fitting.

Lincoln included CO2 regulator adapters as shown below with their regulators when we bought a batch of Power MIGs a few years back.

Unless you are flowing serious amounts of CO2 I don't see freezing being an issue.

This is the Western part you want. I used the Ebay link because it's a good pic.

Remember to get some "CO2 washers" (use that search term) to go with the adapter.
