  • Another welding technique question....

I have achampion elite generator/welder on my service truck. I tried to weld a gate yesterday and it would arc and the engine would power up but it would not maintane a constant bead. I tried to adjust the out put but it still would not maintain a weld? It is like the heat reg. knob is not doing any thing. Any ideas of what could be wrong? Sorry it is a stick welder.

99% of the problems with welding machines are operator issues.

Check all your connections, especially the work lead and clamp to the workpiece. Scores of threads on this.

My first thought is the CV/CC switch, if it has one. Make sure it is on CC for constant current, the proper selection for stick welding.

Champion Elite is CC only. According to the owner's manual, it doesn't even have a DC- position on the selector switch, DC+ and AC only.

Just reverse the battery connections so it starts running backwards.

Don't laugh, I had a government employee ask me to reverse the polarity on an AC high potential test because it might change the results.
