How many amps does it take to run a .045 solid wire with good results, more than 200?

  • #2
It really depends on the joint thickness. Miller's GMAW book says the amperage range for short circuit transfer using .045" is 75-250 amps with wire feed speeds of 70-270 ipm and voltages of 17-23. The owner's manuals for the MM 175 to MM 185 class of welders do not recommend use of solid wire larger than .035".
