  • wirefeed problem handler 140

I purchsed a 10 lb spool of mig wire today but it is not feeding fast enough to supply the weld. It feeds fast until it gets out toward the gun. In other words when i start feeding it down the hose its fine but the farther it gets the slower it goes. I have tried the tenision on the feeder all the way up and at about 2 it makes no difference. I put my little spool back on and it worked fine. Any one have any suggestions. Thanks.

Wire spool drag might be too tight.

Is the new wire the same size as the old wire? Dumb question, I know, but I gotta ask.

yes it is .030 i check twice before i left lowes. is it possible that a different brand will not feed the same. also the old wire was flux cored not mig like the new.

Since the unit senses voltage to run, did you switch the neg & positive output cables or jumpers when you switched from flux to mild steel?

              May have a clogged liner

I maybe a kinked liner. That might solve the problem with it not feeding well once it get towards the gun. Get a new liner and see if it works. they are only 10-12 dollars.

but I dont know why the small spool would feed fine, but the larger spool does not feed. Do you have the adapter for the larger spool. Also, the new spool of wire might not be wound correctly, and could be looped in itself causing a tangling action.

I feel like an idiot but i fixed it today. the thumbscrew that holds the hose into the welder had come loose. I was repaid it lit me up like a christmas tree when I grabbed it, it was still plugged in and I guess from all the feeding with out contact to metal had built up a little power. Any how thanks for all the great suggestions. - The Rookie

                      feed problem

Also watch for a groove worn into the plastic wire feed guide . A change in wire diameter or spool size could cause a catch there . The guide can be rotated to an unworn spot by loosening the set screw .
