  • Cross breed drill press

Here is a project I just completed. The top is an old Walker Turner drill press and the column is from a Foremost made in Taiwan back in the 70s. It had a nice swivel tilt table with a rack to raise and lower the table. The column on the Foremost was larger so I make an adapter to reduce the column diameter and also had to space the table out to match up the center hole with the Walker Turner spindle. I also put a 3-phase motor on it with a VFD. Now I have a good drill press with variable speed and reverse.

Pretty cool! That gives you an infinitely adjustable speed, doesn't it? Or at least to a degree? Am I correct that using a VFD will cause a reduction in torque at lower or higher speeds? Just wondering. I don't have any 3-phase stuff.
