  • clamp question

i would like some way of clamping my work in some type of vice grip / locking pliers gizmo so that it can be suspended above the welding work table. and have that vice grip attached to two arms which swivel and bend and is clamped to my metal work surface, so it can act as a ground conduit also. the vice grip end only needs to clamp up to an inch or so. i could probably fab something together, but does anyone know of a commercially available version of what i'm looking for? thanks.

Take the adjusting screw and weld an eye on it. Another amazing tip from the Edler Weldor!

well, i couldn't resist the temptation to fab it. it is not the best looking thing i ever put together, but it works, and didn't have to spend a dime on it. i built it from stuff lying around my garage.

          nice one

Thats a pretty niffty contraption you came up with, although it does not look like it can handle anything that might have some heft to it. I always prefer to build my own jigs and clamps too. Good Idea.

$20.00 from Harbor Freight, about 1/2 that when on sale. "Helping Hands Clamp". I have one, but the pliers were poor, but easy to slice off and weld some nicer ones on.

i checked northern tool, but didn't see the snake magnet. it looks like it was the only one they didn't carry. then i looked around at other places and couldn't find the snake magnet. has anyone seen this particular snake magnet from "strong hand tools" anywhere for sale on the web? i would certainly be interested in getting one. thanks.

Northern tool carries Stronghand products, but not the snake magnet, it seems. Check this out...you may have a dealer close to you: I have some of those little magnets, and they are real useful.

hey, thanks Rocky D, for that gem of a find at eastwoodco. you are so helpful! do you know if the snake magnet is meant to be an electrical conduit for the ground? are the surfaces of the magnet metal, and therefore transfer the current to the cable? or do i have to connect the ground directly to the workpiece which is suspended?

I wouldn't trust the magnet for a ground...use the cable ground...it's made of copper, and will carry the current.
