picked up a project in need of repair

champion 10000, kohler powered, fire it up, has full 120v at outlets for 5secs or less on every startup , then dies to nothing, the light on the field control board is on, checked bridge rectifier it seems to be good, if i pull the 1 wire that goes from the rectifier to the board and start the welder, i then get a constant 80v

i have taken the board out and inspected it, i pulled capacitors off board and measured caps are 1000 and have a reading of 870

seen posts with bad IGBT on Q5, haven't checked that yet

is there any other sports or things i should be looking at? thanks

You're better off sending the board to someone like myself which specializes in board repair. To answer your question, yes Q5 is typically the component to fail. I have found they fail due to worn brushes or weak brush springs. When the brush doesn't make good contact with the slip ring arcing occurs between the brush and slip ring. The arcing results in large voltage transients which damage the sensitive IGBT. There is a form of filtering and avalanche/freewheel diode protection, but neither is 100% effective since transients can be very unique.
