  • cleaning slip rings

Hi, I want to clean up the rings and brushes on my welder and am wondering what sandpaper to use for the rings? If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks

    Hi,
They make an abrasive stick just for that. You might be able to get one a electrical suppy house. I think they are Ideal brand. Same thing you use for cleaning comutators. Check ebay. I got some there one time. McMaster Carr also.
    Later,
    Dave

DO NOT use sandpaper on the commutator or rings. You may score them or leave grit. A motor repair shop, alternator shop (maybe), or indiustrial supplier (such as McMaster Carr) will stop proper tool, which is a commutator dressing stone (or slip ring dressing stone) often mounted in a holder (which, these days, is usually a plastic stick). If the brushes need seating, you can get an appropriate cloth abrasive strip that won't leave grit from the same sources.
