  • Storing metal?

Ever since I got my welder I have been keeping all the useable metal I get. : )

How does everyone store their metal so it won't rust or at least not rust so fast?

I have a bunch of small scraps for practice and to use for adjusting settings before I weld on my final project.

A couple of weeks ago I used a flap disc to remove all the rust and mil scale, sprayed them with silicone and have them stored in dry boxes.

I haven't tried this before so we'll see how this process works.

Most of my "long" metal is stored outside in the elements but they have been sprayed/coated with ospho to curtail the rust issue.

Does the spray affect welding later? Just a simple wipedown needed? How long does it last?

I heard you can use non-clorinated brake cleaner to wipe the metal to remove the spray before welding. I haven't tried it yet.
