Phil, things are different now. We used to speak in complete and coherent sentences back in the day. (Even things like "Duck!" or "Incoming!" qualified.) Why do people think that you understand their half-thoughts, poorly expressed?

Years back, there were opera singers who would go on for 2 hours in front of an audience. Something about their daughter dating a creep kid next door or the like. All the details, nothing left out.

I hope they got Fred out of that assembly before they turned the machine back on.

Our culture may be in jeopardy.
Each year the level of total generalization of a question gets worse.

Like...... "Machines down, I put Fred in assembly, let me know when it's fixed".

    OR

    In the for sale subforum.............
    Need a transformer for a welder ?????

Best rod depends on the intended purpose. Does it have to have the parent metal properties and be heat-treatable? Just want a strong joint or one that is ductile?

    And, especially, what "tool steel"?

Agreed with above. I cannot tell you I have vast experience with 4010, but can give a helping hand with a given outline. My guess is the job is for production aluminum welding. Either way, what field is this for and whats the scope? 4000 series in general is high silicon and usually welds without difficulty.

Without giving away your work, you need to lay-out a little more
the scope of what you expect you'll need to do.
    Fill-welding? Attaching to what? Thicknesses? Post-weld hardness/stress-releif?
    Etc. Etc.
