Hot rolled or Cold Rolled

    I will keep the madness going as a new member just learning how to use this website. I have often heard people mention hot rolled or cold rolled and really didn't know the difference. After reading this thread I still dont know the difference. If cost was not an issue, which would be better? I will assume cold roll but would like to hear more opinions. Thanks C.B.

        Hot rolled or Cold Rolled

        Can any body write the comparison b/w hot rolled and cold formed mild steel bars basically i want to know is there any difference in mechanical properties,.. we are told that both have same strength but in cold formed yielding is eliminated and TOR is also confusing me with cold formed

        Also plz if any one has ASTM A615/A standard values for steel properties plz post here or tell any link where i can find these standard values,....

          Mike's link above is still valid, and should answer your question. If you are specific about your problem and ask the many CWIs onthe old AWS forum, you may get an answer.

              I'll chime in with my 2cents.
              I find hot rolled material can varry in spec. It is inconsistent from one time to another. Cold rolled on the other hand is generally right on spec. Cold rolled does cost a bit more.

                Isn't it that hot-rolled has greater tolerances on the specifications? Still "in spec," just different specs.
