  • adding a grease zerk?

i have this angle grinder http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-4-...w#.UaP6OkCRDnQ and i noticed that the top cover plate can be removed and you can grease the gears i did this because my grinder runs hot now question is its made of aluminum or magnesium how can i add a grease zerk to keep it well greased to prevent from over heating or will the aluminum plate not be able to be threaded for a grease zerk? sorry ive never added a grease zerk to anything before

You could just drill and thread it it but it does not need it done. Grease and gears is not worth much. Take it apart every 20 hours and lube it and clean the grit out.

      I agree with mike...

You can grease it with a zerk, but you can't clean out the crud. Might as well grab a beer and open 'er up and clean 'er up.

Do not fill the entire cavity with grease. I do not know the science behind it but from what I have read the people that did that said it made it run hotter. Maybe the grease acts as an insulation? I don't see the point of even putting as much grease as it came from the factory with. If it is getting hot enough to start to liquify the grease you are going to know it anyway.

I trtied putting a few drops of synthetic 80/90 in it for giggles but they get hot, its just the way it is, dont loose sleep over it, something else will likely puke before the gear fails. Got a whole box of broke ones to prove this out.

Secondly,, especially for the hobby/diy and many pros wont admit this but the B&D 7750 from Walmart for 30$ is about the best grinder they make especially if one considers the price. Only thing i ever had with one was a switch and it was 10X beyond owing me anything at that point, the cords last forever, huge improvement over the rubber found on "better" tools. In an effort to cheap it a bit they inadvertantly made it better,,, same with the brushes over the Dewalt and the old industrial versions of this unit, the secret is that its got the same guts and better brushes, cheaper label, different box.

Menards had a sale last winter, bought 2 new and put on the shelf, will put a spare on my service truck. It was a convenience spare situation but ast this rate its unlikely I really need them. Never really had any others work as well as long and not worth the 100 difference.

Even the cases look good after being beat, after one uses it a few minutes you soon forget how cheap it was,, its one of my "still super impressed" tools after all these years.
