  • Built another tank today

Guys are starting to store gas with the prices down thinking they will save money.....

    All tacked up...

I like to weld the bung on both sides(welded inside also)

Then I put a collar on for a little more strength...

    Weld all around...

    Inlet and outlet

    Weld up all the seams..

A couple pieces of angle to mount it...

    And BAM one fuel tank.....

Nice work. Is there a baffle installed or will this tank be just a nurse tank?

I bet they talk about your bunghole work all the way to San Francisco!

This tank was 1/4" 6061 and I used my big torch (5/32 tungsten) with gas lens. Alumix gas 75-25 Argon Helium. I set the amps at 190 but with a small torch and 1/8" tungsten, thinner material, I use around 130 amps..

All BS aside, I find that an aluminum bung will tend to gall after several uses with either an aluminum or steel cap. Maybe a large helicoil would eliminate this issue.

                  Again, nice work.

Yeah I agree, I think the customer will have to deal with it though because I'm busy eating GRITS...

                      That Sure Is Purrrrdddy

Thats beautiful but I have to ask one question. Why so nice and expensive just to store gasoline? Why not just put it in 55 gallon drums? They are free is you look for the right places to get them and $5 if you want to buy them. They last just fine if you set them on a pallet. Hauling it around is probably as legal as your tank without some sort of DOT blessing but don't ask don't tell seems to suffice well.
FWIW and most people don't know this a plastic pickup truck bed is the most dangerous place to fill any tank. If you are filling anything from a 5 gallon can to a drum either put it on the ground to fill it or run a ground clamp for while you are filling. Winter is the worst time for static electric spark and when most accidents like this occur. SOP for any of these rigs and even your car and more so for the ones with plastic filler mouths is put nozzle in and leave it there touching the sides. Don't put it in and out diddling with it to see if its full ect just in and out once.
Just toss some Stable in the can and it will last a year just fine. Been there done that. I don't know where these guys get that 90 day stuff from, one sniff will tell you if its good and if you get water in it it will come right out with one of those black magic funnels. One caution though, gasahol. Thats a new frontier and you do have the separation issue. I read a guy who deliberately watered it and found out this. At the point of 1 pint to 10 gallon of gasahol the alcohol will separate right out. Try to get real gas if you are storing. Check to see if yours is one of the 7 states that doesn't require gasahol to be labled at the pump if you haven't seen the little stickers already. I sure wish I could weld like you do!!!!!!!!

Don't know the details. Just built it for my customer...I think it has to fit in a space that big,and that is what he came up with.....And thanks for the flowers...I have a lot of practice at this game so I guess it paid off. It's for diesel.

BC, that's a nice looking tank you put together. You live in the same state as I do although we're about 200 miles apart. I seem to recall that California prohibits the storage of gasoline (and possibly diesel fuel also) in surface tanks and containers - other than in small jerry cans. Isn't this true, and, how is your customer getting around this?

Whatever kind of regulation one can think of, California's already legislated it!

here in cali. you can transport up to 100 gallons legally. without paper or placards. I had a buddy who hauled it all the time. he got his deisel very cheap. I used to give him **** because I always said he was illegal because he never counted the gallons in the fuel tank in his truck. as for using a drum. being we live in the tree hugger capitol. you get frowned upon for hauling an unsafe drum of whatever in the back of your truck. no matter how well it is tied down. thats just what my buddy said.
